Butcher Block

Butcher block tops are made of many types of wood. We carry Maple and Mahogany in 1 3/8" and 1 7/8" thicknesses. The wood is kiln dried and tends to expand when it gets wet. It may turn black or discolored if water is left on the top. The butcher block can be left unsealed or sealed with oil, or urethane. If left unsealed, the tops will be extremely porous and will stain easily. It will also cut easily and allow bacteria to live and breed in its pores and cuts. We recommend cleaning butcher block with a de-chlorinated bleach and water solution. Butcher block does burn easily and should have a trivet used for hot items. If the butcher block tops are sealed, they should not be cut on. Butcher block tops can still absorb moisture from the dishwasher humidity and at the edges of the sink and cook-top cutouts. The top will warp or swell around the sink, and can eject the sink as the cutout constricts.

Tile

We do not install any tile counter tops. We do install tile backsplash to accent your counter top. There are many types and qualities of tile to consider. Ceramic tile offers a multitude of different colors and sizes to fit any color scheme. They are also non-porous which helps prevent staining. Natural stone tile is a wonderful accent for a backsplash or floor. Which ever you choose, make sure you know about any maintenance that is associated with that particular type of tile.
